Re: What did you play today?

Hadn't touched the horn in 3 months. Went to band practice last night. Lots and lots of wrong notes. Maybe this should be in the bad ideas thread...

You probably have some kind of blockage. Snake everything, or use a hose and flush it out.

Yamaha Silent Brass initial impressions

Well, I pulled the trigger on a Yamaha Silent Brass System (let's call it an SBS) tuba mute. It arrived yesterday and I was able to take it out of the box and assemble it today.

Sweetwater shipped it in the factory box, which they had opened in order to toss in a copy of my receipt along with a ...

There was a 1242, but it was a top action horn.

Oh, man. Look at that seller's feedback. I wouldn't buy anything from them even if I wanted it and the price was right.

Re: my high school's (bought new c. 1968 or so) band uniforms

We had wonderful marching uniforms during high school. I loved them. Our director retired the year I graduated and the new director apparently didn't like them, or figured they were too old or some such, and replaced them with some newer DCI-style garbage. I found out years later that the old ...

Re: What did you play today?

Scales. I played lots of scales in keys with lots of flats and lots of sharps. And then I opened up the Bill Bell solo book and played the Gavotte, because it's light and fun.

Further, Frankentubas is a private group, requiring a FB account plus approval by the group's admins. In other words, yes, you should copypasta your ads here.

Re: Tuba soloists

I recently became aware of Bernd Van Echelpoel. He's the tubist for the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. There's one solo album, titled "Berno", on Spotify. It's worth a listen.

WITHDRAWN - John Packer JP179B

No longer for sale.

JP179B BBb 3/4 tuba, along with a Schlipf practice mute.

I purchased the tuba new in 2021 from a dealer in PA. It's in very nice condition, probably better than many "demo" horns. There is one very small ding in the bell that's so hard to see I generally have to locate it by ...

I'm genuinely confused. (Note, I've never auditioned for anything more rigorous than college admissions.) What, exactly, is that list for?

Re: Mozart Serenade for tuba

I don't think it's that one, but I could be mistaken. I can't find a Kv number.

The young man in this video is playing the 2 and 4th movements, menuetto and rondo, and I think it's the Morris arrangement.

Mozart Serenade for tuba

I'm putting my music history ignorance on display here.

I have a copy of Serenade, W.A. Mozart, transcribed and edited for tuba and piano by R. Winston Morris. Shawnee Press. Etc., etc. The description on the back page does not specify which serenade. Would anyone know specifically which Serenade ...

Well, I didn't do the college thing, my list is short.

Jr. High - Gene Rotramel. He was the band director and a wonderful euphoniumist.
High School - Russ Kormeier. Also the band director. Trumpet guy.
Also during HS - Rich Elder. 399th Army Band tubist.
Now - I take a lesson irregularly with Grant ...

Re: USA (symphonic use) bass-tuba-phobia (a nonsensical rant)

The LOTR symphony has a "bass tuba" part. It's actually written for contrabass, but it says "bass" at the top. I was confused when I first got the music and leaned over to look at my fellow tubaists' parts, wondering if theirs said "contrabass".

Re: What mouthpiece do you use?

I currently have a few and might be going down a rabbit hole.

Schilke 62. I don't care much for this one. It produces a "breathy" sound on both of my tubas. I can also hear my own tongue movement. On the other hand, if I really concentrate I can get a nice round tone out of it, but it takes work ...
