Re: Tuba soloists
Jeez - how did nobody mention the one guy whose tuba solos are probably the most iconic and most widely heard by people all over the planet of any tubist ever via his movie soundtracks - the legendary Tommy Johnson.
I will also add to the list the great Rich Matteson - who spent a couple years with The Dukes of Dixieland on helicon and of course his work with Harvey Phillips in the Matteson Phillips TubaJazz Consort. Those records still hold up all these years later and my local jazz station plays them at least once a week. He also was a phenomenal Euphonium player.

Dave Gannett - the one album I know: "Tubas from Hell". Music for a rainy day on the sofa.
Walter Hilgers, especially the albums "Tubaroque" and "Tubadour" with pianist Sebastian Knauer.
Michel Godard
Andreas Martin Hofmeir
Albert Wieder
Bob Stewart

Bargeron, almost all of us olds saw him on tv when we were sprouts.
Almost all of us olds had friends who sought us out to tell us about seeing BS&T tuba on tv
if public acclaim is important...in that time, to us, Dave is very important as a tuba soloist. RiP

Re: Tuba soloists
I recently became aware of Bernd Van Echelpoel. He's the tubist for the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. There's one solo album, titled "Berno", on Spotify. It's worth a listen.

I am a little surprised no one has mentioned Eduardo Nogueroles... I really like his playing

Re: Tuba soloists
Thank you for starting this thread!
It feels like i have heard of less
than half the names here, and the youtube posts of playing probably i will appreciate more than the names when i find the time. But yeah, i am relatively ignorant too, so keep 'em coming and maybe i'll be less ignorant eventually.
