Re: "Mass/weight changes how a brass instrument mouthpiece plays an instrument."
Don't all of those series feature huge throats, which would mean that you were putting as much air in there as those huge throats require - thus the air column was vibrating more than normal and causing that loose whatever to vibrate.
That is a DAMN good point. It never happened on any other ...

Re: "Mass/weight changes how a brass instrument mouthpiece plays an instrument."
Many, many years ago I was at Baltimore Brass trying out Dave's personal 2145 with his mods. I normally carry a few mouthpieces with me and one of them was my Deck 3, which was the second or third mouthpiece I tried in it. As soon as I started playing, the horn started rattling and Dave exclaimed ...

I have been told by Tom Holtz that a GOOD example of one of these is the best Eb he’s ever played. Willie Clark has one that is a good example and he says it’s amazing.

People should understand this is a Unicorn - that plating was most likely done by Anderson after being imported and I'll bet they never did more than a couple dozen. That horn is 40-50 years old and appears to be in excellent condition from the photos. Had I the cash, I'd be on my way to South Bend ...

Looking for a CLEAN copy of the band part for tuba. Anyone have one in PDF format that they could send me? All the copies in our band library are dog*hit.
Please PM or email my username at AOL if you have one to share. Thanks!

Re: The MW 2141 Eb
Same problem I had with my MAWs for my Getzen - the casings were slightly out of round. We plated the MAWs, then lapped them in. If it had been worse then the play was to make the casing round by boring them out and plate the valves to build up the thickness but that wasn't necessary.

I love the fact they named it "Skylark" - I think naming tubas after old cars could be cool. Now excuse me while I go practice on 6/4 Volare'

I don't think it's a secret that Steve has been dealing with focal dystonia for quite some time now, I mean if I know it then it can't really be a secret. Amazing player, never met him but been told he's a GREAT guy.

I look at my knife block and see several knives, all unique, all with a purpose they excel at. Yes, they all cut, but, some are better for some jobs than others. I try to avoid having knives that excel at the exact same thing as each other and have similar properties.

I don't know what kind of upgrades they may have done, but as I understand it repairs were completed to the point of making the place operational.
I know WHY they host it in Brucker Hall when they can (money), but, Minor is too small and Loboda has rehearsals going on so it can't be used for many ...

Re: My take on MAW valves - Long term thoughts
I purchased a set for my Getzen, and ended up having them nickel-plated before final fitting. They do not stick. Turns out, my Getzen has had an interesting life and the valve casings are not *exactly* circular, so the extra plating ended up being a very good thing prior to final fitting. I could ...

I think you replaced your original posting with all the details with your bump message... you should probably re-post the original stuff (location, pictures, etc)

Re: Unhooking Joe's BBb Leash…
Rick Denney 's 5/4 BBb Hirsbrunner is *the* best BBb tuba I have ever played. It's a rare bird, but it's the only BBb I ever seriously considered purchasing. I've not sampled a LOT from this side of the buffet, but, that one stood out. Chasing down one of those rare birds wouldn't be easy but could ...

Re: What's with all the 836s for sale?
I think this has been the “hot” new tuba for a while and people are looking for different fits. I love mine but it would NOT have been a good choice for me in college or at other various points in my life.

I've been trying to get a longer tuning slide for my Eastman 836 for well over 2 1/2 years, even bringing the issue to the attention of Chuck Kerrigan who put me in touch with "the right people".
Suffice to say, 2 1/2 years later I still don't have a longer tuning slide for my 836.
And they ...

Re: tuba quartet instruments
Two English style baritones (or two rotary ones that feature bugles just as slim), a euphonium on 3rd, and a bass tuba on the fourth part.
This, in my head, sounds more like an orchestral trombone section than a traditional tuba quartet, and would be interesting to hear. I don't know if the ...

Re: Why should or shouldn’t I renew my ITEA membership?
In the 21st century, I just don't see the need for this organization. Much of the content it provides is readily available on the Internet, often times at a higher quality. ITEA struggles with its identity - is it meant for professionals, educators, students, or simply people who play either tuba or ...

Re: How many tubas and euphoniums does a 50 or 60 piece wind band really need?
I'm going to take the assumption that everyone in the ensemble can play a high or moderately-high level.
At 50, 2 euphs, 2 tubas, 5 perc, 3 trombones, 4 horns, 4 saxes (2 alto, 1 tenor and bari), 2 bassoons, 8 trumpets, 11 Bb clarinets, 1 Eb clarinet, 1 bass clarinet, 1 contrabass clarinet, 2 oboes ...
