dimensions of big detachable bell tubas

Post by lost »

As I was desperately scouring the internet marketplaces searching for a chest/case for my big detachable bell tubas so I could take one to tuba Xmas, as well as looking for bags to carry bells in, I thought it might be nice to have the measurements of the bodies/recording bells available to anyone who needs the dimensions since this was very time consuming. This is especially useful for making your own cases, packing them, getting boxes, or finding steamer trunks for storage. I also did some fun side by side comparisons. I don't stand by the accuracy of these, as it was done with a crude approximation and a measuring tape, but it should be pretty close and/or helpful to somebody, somewhere, someday.

Conn 20J/24J/26J/36J Deluxe Recording Tuba

Holton 105/350 Mammoth/Artist Recording Bell Tuba
Body is 33.5 inches tall, body is 19 inches wide at lower bell tenons, 21.5 inches widest point near lead pipe, 19 inch circumference above the bell tenon, 8.25 inch bell opening diameter, 22lb body with 3 valves, 23.75 standard bell size, 15.25 inch bell width

Martin Mammoth Recording Bell Tuba
Body is 27.5 inches tall, body is 18 inches wide at the lower tenons, 20 inches at its widest point of the lead pipe, 19 inch circumference above the bell tenon, 7.75 inch bell opening diameter, 23.5 lb body with four valves, 20.25 inch bell width, 24 inch standard bell size

York Model 726 Deluxe Monster Recording Bass
Body is 32 inches tall, body is 19 inches wide at the lower tenons, body is 22 inches widest point , 18.75 inch circumference above bell tenon, 7.75 inch bell opening diameter, 19.5 lbs with 3 valves, 26 inch bell, 16.25 inch bell width

Making sense of the measurements, is standard bell dimension the diameter? And bell width how tall the bell is face down?

I'll keep an eye out for things that could serve.

I think i have come across cases for Kings and Reynolds off hand, but they are a notch smaller.

Taylor Music's cases will fit a top-action Martin Mammoth and its recording bell. They'll ask you for the dimensions of your horn and will adjust some of the interior elements to fit. They are not light or cheap, but they fit well and are well built.

Yes on both questions. Old old conn cases resemble steamer trunks, so im hoping to score one someday! Anyone know what cases the Holton detachables came in?
