Re: This darn strap and my 981.
Thanks everyone for your help on this.
I got kinda cranky because it was so frustrating to make it work. My apologies.
I've decided on modifying my current stand to allow it to adjust to a standing position. I'm not marching around. I'm standing on one spot playing...a standing stand would work just fine.
Makes note of this post so I can make fun of myself later.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
The back problem issue mentioned it something to consider. I thought being a large man I'd be immune to such things. But no.
I pinched a nerve in my back (L-5 I think) sometime over the past year and picking up the 24lb Willson from the side of my chair repeatedly during rehearsal has made the pain much worse. My solution is to play my Martin Mammoth on its stand. I lift it once into the stand and sit on the chair next to it. Worked well last week and all the pieces we're playing work with the Mammoth in supporting the string basses.
I believe I could raise it another foot to play standing but I'd have to be careful about it getting knocked over. That would make a big noise and would of course happen during a grand pause.
Perhaps I could modify the stand to accommodate the Willson when needed.

I'm totally set on making a standing stand.
I'll leave the harnesses for other things.

...I was thinking you could get another 3+1 Eb with the lower Fletcher style lead pipe... Maybe name it Winnefred (Winifred)?... Could be a cool addition to the family...anadmai wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 9:44 pm ...
No. Don’t tell me an alternative solution. I’m trying to get this to work.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
I had my eye on a 981 from Baltimore Brass but it sold. It has the fletcher style lead pipe which would have worked with BOTH harnesses.
As far as a name is concerned, I have a couple suggestions. My current Eb Bass is named after the guy Shine As The Light was dedicated to. A former bandmate of mine.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
I named a couple of tubas that I owned quite a few years ago...
They weren't nice names, and those tubas weren't long for bloke's world.
(sold, soon thereafter)

No experience with any of these, but have you looked at the Tubabelt? I've seen it in use by both Willi from Mnozil, and Carol Jantsch for standing/walking gigs. Still requires the horn to have a ring in the right position though.

I looked into it but their website shows no proof it works with English style horns. I emailed and they assured me it did, but nah...
A standing stand it is.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
The bottom harness/strap thingie looks like it would work well for my old 186 and PT-15 which don't have any loops welded on.
It looks easy for me, but I'm playing German tubas, not those backwards British ones.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
I fought the same battle with the Neo-tech before --**discarding**-- it. Forcefully.
I did try a Meinl-Weston it was, I believe, from Dan Schultz, and it was much better. I then went to a much smaller, lighter horn for stand-up stuff and gifted the M-L to a friend. I doubt anyone will ever be happy with the Neo-tech design--much more trouble than it's worth. Sorry!

I’m possibly buying a 15” Eb Bass and it’ll be a lot lighter.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
About the stationary stand for standing. Weather you are converting a tuba stand or a cheap drum throne, the riser, be it wood or metal can be used at two or more different heights. The shortest being the full lenght of the riser dropped to bottom of the base, with some sort of movable or stationary band around the outside to keep the riser from going all the way into the base. I like mine made from a second hand throne. I can rest the tuba on a wider sit while waiting to play. Not as likely to add a dent, and allows me to turn the tuba flat while at rest. I just set the riser for two different heights, just turning it over for the change in height.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
If you're asking about pictures of my stand up stand, I have never figured out how to post a picture on this sight. But it is very simple to make. Take the bottom of the stand to your local lumber store. Find the wooden dowels section. They come in four foot lengths of various diameters from 1/4 inch to over an inch. Find a "Straight" one that slides easily into you bottom tube with as little slop as you can find. Pay for it please. When you get it at home or where ever you keep you tuba, put the dowel in the base and put your sit on top. Place our tuba on top of that and figure out how much wood to cut off. Cut it long the first time so you can dial it in slowly.
I am a dumb old fart, I did it.

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
I found a carbon fiber tripod I was no longer using.
The main post and the top where my horn rests is almost identical to the main post of the tripod. I replaced the main part of the tripod with said part from the horn rest. The horn rest is a tad narrower but when you tighten the post it clamps down.
Gave it a quick test and it appears to work. It’s not perfect but it’ll serve its intended purpose. It’ll tip over if I’m careless, but the top of the rest seems to do the trick.

Well, I need something similar. I think I’ve got a decent Hercules one. Been using an Alps chair. I have a rebuilt left hip. And only want to rehearse up to 90 minutes. Plus, wtf do some of these people do for over 2 hrs?
