This darn strap and my 981.

Post by anadmai »

So I’m two harnesses in.

I’m ready to shiv a small aquatic mammal.

Does anyone have a video or a photo of how someone has used this darn harness with a horn of my type. Besson 981.

I bought a neotech harness.

I’ve fought with it for over an hour.

No. Don’t tell me an alternative solution. I’m trying to get this to work.

All I know is she wants to use a strap-on with a harness & it also some how involves a tuba.

Seems like a question more suited to that other forum or is that a low blow... :smilie2:

I have both. Now. Grrrr.

I’ve watched the video multiple times. Doesn’t apply to my horn.

The videos only take FA into account.

For both harnesses.

I have 3+1 top action.

I have yet to see a video of anyone getting them to work.

From the first thread about this:
bloke wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 9:37 am With two different tubas I've owned, I looked through my junk/stuff (though you likely don't have a junk/stuff parts box), found two VERY heavy-duty strap rings in good condition, spent some time figuring out precisely where they would need to be soldered to the instrument (for a simple straight leather strap to put the mouthpiece right on my mouth - I ran a rope around as a strap substitute and had a helper-friend position the ends of the rope), and soldered the two strap rings in place.

On one of those two instruments mentioned above, one of the strap rings ended up being in a sort-of bizarre spot, but - nevertheless - it was the correct spot for such a strap.

I've noticed in quite a few threads here that - when I have remarkable success by doing something, and report on it - rather than just buying something - it's as if I didn't post it all, and people keep talking about buying something.

Sorry, yes, top action does seem like it would be a different set up. I was trying to get the conversation back on track.

While Bloke has the ability to solder on (or move) strap rings, if you don't you might try two of these (you may need a larger size, but you get the idea) to move around until you get them in the best spots. Then you could have strap rings soldered on there, or leave the velcro straps on.

That's an excellent test method. Mine was a little bit more precarious. I found a surface that supported the tuba at the perfect height and the perfect angle and I had Mrs bloke tape a piece of twine from one point to another...but I like your test method better, even though mine worked out.

Actually, I made some temporary strap rings out of big bent washers braised onto hooks (all steel), set them in place, let earth magnets (carefully dropped down on the inside) find them, and tested with those prior to soldering on brass strap rings, so I didn't have to move the brass ones.

Here is a picture from a Whit Friday in the U.K. If you look at the tuba player on the right of the photo (lacquer finish horn) it might give you some ideas about strap positioning.

Another suggestion that was once given to me was to get a soft rope that's very flexible, and experiment with lashing it to different parts of the horn until you find a comfortable spot for you. Then have strap rings soldered on.

I ended up trying that on my 12J, thought I had the ideal spot, then after a while realized I was still hunching. I did it two or three times, had the rings moved, and still the same issue.

It's worth noting that a tuba player I know who made his living on standing gigs at Disney, is now at retirement age and has back issues, even though his strap is at his most "ideal" spot.

I ended up giving up on the strap and just hold the horn. I can get through a 30-minute set, even with my ~35lb Kanstul 5/4 horn, but my arm does get tired. But I decided a little muscle soreness is better than back soreness.

I just acquired a YBB-103 for the same gig as aforementioned guy as a sub, and since I don't need the 4th valve (and the horn is mic'd), the horn is tiny enough that I think this works without a strap. I can do the Kanstul on the gig, but it was just too much tuba for that music. I needed something brighter, and my 12J is taking too long for the valve overhaul, so I had an excuse for a new horn.

I use a modified round drum throne for my stand up events, if I don't have to move around. Just replace the metal riser with the correct size dowel cut to fit your height requirements. I am too old for marching any more.

As seen on TV just before TubaChristmas each year.

Have you actually used these things? I’m seriously asking as I haven’t. I’m not sure I’d trust velcro to hold anything of any real weight especially something valuable or easily damaged. I looked at the HD link and they show them even being used for hanging a ladder on a garage wall and all I’m thinking is some time at some odd hour on some odd day that thing is going let go and ladder is going to smash into one of my cars. With a tuba I’d fear that velcro failing on stage especially with the strain of motion - causing a catastrophic failure with horn crashing to the floor.

I’ve never been a fan of standing and playing with a tuba. I’ve done it and with some big horns, but it was never fun. Hence now, if it’s a standing gig -it’s helicon or sousaphone or me no go. I have always marveled at our British counterparts marching along with those big Besson BBb tubas. I’ve got one and think that has to ultimately lead to serious back pain - even with a harness - at least later in life.

I fought for an entire day and couldn’t get it to work comfortably.

For my performance last night went back to the cradle harness and let’s say it didn’t go well.

Not even part way through I had to just hold it.

Ugh.

I went looking and his leadpipe is different. Just that difference is a world apart from mine. It changes the playing angle.

Good find.

Not that exact brand, but 4 similar ones have suspended my rowing shell (35 lb), oars (not much), and it’s carcroof rack (probably 20 lbs) from the rafters in the garage for about a year and a half, under which is the parked car.

Good so far. :fingerscrossed:

But yes, I would probably use them to find good spots to solder strap rings, just for piece of mind.
