Do the work...

Post by tofu »

Bloke’s post about the current state of his old HS band got me thinking to post this as to how a good HS band director can have such a huge impact on kids including the ones not going on in music. The tuba is involved in the story and not in the way you might imagine. Jason Benetti grew up in my area of suburban Chicago and was the voice of the Chicago White Sox for several years.

Not sure why he left - perhaps for money and/or the fact that White Sox & Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf has a long history of not liking any criticism (or telling of truth about his operations) from team announcers. :gaah: People forget that legendary Hall of Fame broadcaster Harrey Carey was the voice of the Sox for several years before being fired by Jerry and then going on to his fabled stay as the beloved announcer of the CUBS. Harry had a propensity of telling the truth of the lack of effort etc of players and coaches & the owner :smilie6: - so Reinsdorf fired him.

Anyways, Jason the subject of the interview went on to broadcast for Detroit -where he now does their TV Broadcast as well as taking over the Bob Costas TV role on Sunday Night Baseball for NBC. Jason does an excellent job. He has Cerebral Palsy. Doing a job most people would think only a former athlete would be eligible for. For kids with Cerebral Palsy he is a great example of how CP doesn’t define you nor is it a barrier to success.

Jason credits not a former coach for his success & career - but just one person - his old HS band director (now retired) - who also happens to be a percussionist in my band & the asst. band director. I had no idea he even had taught Jason until I saw this interview. I won’t spoil the interview, but it really shows how a good teacher going the extra mile and thinking outside the box can have such a tremendous impact on a child’s future success in life.

So a big shout out to all the band directors out there going the extra mile and propelling kids to excellence and success. I still appreciate what the great ones did for me. And here’s to that timeless & proven idea of "Just Do the Work!"

Only 25 minutes from my high school alma mater (video linked in first post above) is a high school called Bartlett High School.

We keep their instruments repaired and we've sold them several JP sousaphones and other JP marching brass.
