somewhat spooky-to-me video

Post by bloke »

A friend of mine (the banjo player - now in his mid-80s and still playing) posted this ancient homemade video (probably originally made with a "camcorder") on Facebook, today.
For various reasons, I quit this band five years prior (1984) to the date of this homemade video (1989). I was in the band when I was about 24 - 28 years old (at least 12 years younger than the next youngest player, the text youngest person in the band having been the trombonist PRIOR TO the trombonist seen in this video). I played roughly 50/50 tuba and bass. After I quit the band, the subsequent players were all upright bass players. The one in this video is the second replacement after I quit. We wore out the west coast jazz festival scene, toured UK, the Netherlands, had a weekly Sunday job that paid each of us $75 on Sunday afternoons, and played other special engagements.
None of us considered it to be a "job" (certainly not a full-time job and not even really a part-time job, in our minds), but each of us made about $17,000/yr. (according to my old tax returns) working with this band (roughly the equivalent of $55,000 to $60,000 in 2026 money).
Looking at this 1979 (post-bloke-era) video, I suddenly realized that every single one of the band members - other than the banjo player - are dead. 😳
I believe the second youngest member of the band - when I was in it (again: the trombone player previous to the trombone player in this video) - is probably now at least 82 years old.
(To be completely candid, one of the reasons I left the band was because the previous trombone player left, and was replaced with the one in this video.) :smilie6:
