WTB: Bowl or Geib style mouthpiece

Post by Tubaryan12 »

Looking for something with a rounded rim and no larger than 32.3 mm inside diameter with American shank.
Full explanation: I recently acquired a 3/4 Weril BBb tuba and I'm looking for a mouthpiece for it. I recently tried a Mike Finn 2B on i and I liked it better than anything else I've tried on it to date. I'm looking to experiment a little. Let me know what you got.

To each his own.
With a small contrabass tuba, it's too easy for me to get a brash type of resonance with a bowl cup (unless you're talking about a deep bowl cup), and any type of funnel mouthpiece (including Geib which is a hybrid - whereby a bowl shape is superimposed over a funnel shape) is - in my view - too large.

I can play a King 2B trombone with a euphonium mouthpiece, but it really restricts what the instrument was designed to do, and I can also play a King 2B with one of those tiny and super shallow cup vintage Olds mouthpieces, but that sort of takes away all of the bass resonance and turns the treble resonance up to 10, which results in a type of resonance which many might judge as grating. Those extremes are also going to affect the response of that small of an instrument, because they just aren't a good match, as far as optimum resistance and the physical things involved in playing - beyond the sonic things.

Okay. Enough with the analogies.

The first type of mouthpiece that I would suggest trying would be a medium depth funnel cup mouthpiece, but at least an eighth of an inch shallower than a typical Helleberg (funnel), Bach 7 (bowl), or Geib (hybrid).

I don't know enough about makes and models of mouthpieces to know which ones would have a narrow embouchure opening such as you are requesting, but - as that embouchure opening is your requirement, I would first look at medium depth funnels with that embouchure opening and the rim style of your preference.

How much shallower is a Bach 22 than a Bach 18 or Bach 7?
Those are bowl cups, but maybe the 22 is in the depth range that would play a very small contrabass tuba best. (That's an honest question, and not an implied statement.)

Maybe look up the specs for a Bach 22 and see what they are.
(I don't know what they are, and I've got to put this phone away and get back to work. It's Sunday, and Sunday - along with the other six - is a work day.)

bloke,
Bach 22 is my go to testing mouthpiece and I didn't like it. Ironically, the guy I sold my blokepiece solo to said that the solo should work well on this horn. I've been too busy to catch up with him to test this theory.

I hope it makes you happy.
It's a c. Yamaha 103-sized instrument.
I sorta wish you had stumbled across a used Imperial...
...and I don't blame you for buying used.
I do too...

I do hane an imperial but maybe I tried it with the wrong rims. I'll put those C4LA rims I own on it and give that a shot.
