"The Big Man with the Big Horn"

Post by Dave Detwiler »

Hi all! As an early Christmas gift for Sousaphone enthusiasts (yeah, perhaps I'm the only one!), here is the fascinating story of "The Big Man with the Big Horn," John W. "Jack" Richardson (1874-1939), who was the face of that unique shoulder-borne instrument for at least a generation. This is the video version of my ITEA Journal article that was published almost a year ago now. Enjoy!

Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1925 Pan American Sousaphone and an 1899 Conn tuba!
