A rather specific question... I've got a 1918 York Model 33 Bb tuba, and I keep reading how York tubas have large mouthpiece receivers, but mine has a diameter of 14 mm (0.55 inches). "Standard" tuba mouthpieces barely go in, and since the horn already plays a bit flat, they just make things worse. I've got an bunch of old mouthpieces and one fits fine, but it's pretty beat up and I'd like to upgrade. Given the size of the receiver on my horn, should I be looking for a small shank mouthpiece? Or European (or are those the same as small shank?)?
Perhaps someone else has an similar vintage York Model 33 and could share what they've got for a mouthpiece.

I may not have a vintage York 33...
... But I've read that the only York models with the larger-than-Euro (itself larger than standard/American) receivers are the big 6/4 instruments. The 33 is *not* one of those.
It sounds like you need a small or "British" (about the size of a large shank trombone piece) shank mouthpiece to go with it. A Wick without the "L" in the designation (perhaps a 1 or 2) can get you on the right track.
It also may not be too difficult to swap the receiver for a standard size one, opening the door for many more mouthpiece choices. Check with your tech.

I used a Mirafone C4 on mine ...and had the shank shaved down a bit so it went further in. I still have the mouthpiece. If you're interested in it shoot me a PM and we can discuss it. Besst to you, Ed

This. If you are playing it with a modern group, change out the receiver. If you wanting a mouthpiece for the small receiver, the recommendations work in the absence of a vintage york model mp, which dont spring up that often.Kevbach33 wrote: Tue Dec 16, 2025 2:37 pm I may not have a vintage York 33...

If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?
