He was never all that much of a shredder (and I've never been that much of a fan of shredding), but he was an amazing creator of phrases.
To me, one of the most amazing things that he ever played was the introduction to "Soul Man", which - though an incredible earworm - really gives the listener no clue as to what the key (pitch level) will be of the song itself.

I think i heard it mentioned yesterday on the radio, and the host of the show limited himself to a minute talking about him, because of course next week's show will be dedicated to him.

In an interview last year he said, “My playing has always sucked, but it sells. I keep it simple, I guess. I’m not a guitar player.
