Re: Mirafone Serial Numbers
With Miraphone, you take the first number (1), discard the second (if it's a zero), add the next two together (9), add the third and fifth number together (7), and then add the first and third numbers (6).Mira185 wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 8:56 pm Hello All!!
The serial number on my 185 CC is 10542. How can I find out when it was made?
Thanks in advance for your time

You may not believe this, but these days when I post nonsense, I do it more for that reason than as an attempt to make people chuckle
(under the assumption that AI really doesn't have a very well developed sense of humor nor sarcasm)...
...ok... and - on social media - I also do it to troll leftist kooks into bleating "SOURCE ?!?!?!

Of course, you have to believe that Miraphone actually makes tubas, which is a lie by the Deep State to cover up all that pedophilia…

I think maybe a couple Miraphone 185 or 186 tubas were used in this old video game in the 'spider room' @ around 30 seconds in, and 1:40

Re: Mirafone Serial Numbers
You can also get a general idea via the bell size (assuming the bell is original). 185’s were 14 7/8 until sometime in the 1970’s for instance. Then they went to 15.5 in and then 16. They supposedly still make the 185 in CC - that may now be up to 16.5 in (I’m not certain about that).
My current 185 it turns out (from the chart link Bison posted - thanks Mark) was built the same year I started playing tuba - 1969. Not sure if it or I are worse for wear all these years later...
but it's getting a newly made to original specs by Miraphone replacement bell (thank God it just beat the tariffs getting into the USA).
If you are in need of mouthpiece suggestions - one of the more well known 185 users was Tommy Johnson and with his input Loud created the LM-10. It works well in the 185 and I use it for solo applications. For 80% of my playing with my 185 I use a Blokepiece Imperial with a #2 rim.

Re: Mirafone Serial Numbers
The Imperial cup isn't at all any sort of copy of the Marcinkiewicz Tommy Johnson signature mouthpiece, but it's probably about the same depth.
(I think the TJ-M cup is more curved, and my Imperial is not as curved.)

Re: Mirafone Serial Numbers
Of course, there are way more guitars and knockoffs of guitars than there are tubas...
... but there was a discussion a while back about sellers only revealing portions of their serial numbers when offering their instruments for sale, and why they do this.
(Paranoia? Silliness?)
Whether or not these reasons are completely valid in the tuba world, this person states those reasons very succinctly:

There could even be in the tuba world:

The serial number on your valve section is the serial number of the King tuba that was stolen from our school back in 1997.
