Which of the horns in your signature is that thing?

I guess I haven't updated that. It's a Rudy Meinl Bayreuth 5/4 BBb. I got it from a local community player. He was able to attend the concert and hear it from the other end!

I’m a bit green with envy. The Bayreuth model is one I have always wanted to try but never had the opportunity.

I have tried the 6/4 behemoth, and it is something on another level. I could get used to it if it was in the budget. It is otherworldly.

Here is our Lincoln Civic Orchestra (community orchestra that's been around for about 45 years, I believe) low brass section. I played with the group for several seasons about 10 years ago, had to leave for scheduling reasons, then started back again last season. It's grown to about 90 people.

Gives me a new appreciation for:

Thank you. We've tried really hard to raise them well. Working on giving them a good start so they can do better. The drummer wants to be an electrician. Going to college next year, then a trade school. Hornist wants to be a screenwriter, or author of some sort. One more year of HS, looking at a film school in Vermont.

I'm terrible with ties. My neck is so fat I cant button the top button of my shirts. If I get a shirt that fits my neck, the rest of it is like a tent. When I was in college i had a few shirts taken in so they fit better. Now, whatever. Its clean and white. Good nuff for me.

A small part of the Euphonium section from the 2025 Oktubafest in Fredericksburg, TX. This event always kicks off the Oktoberfest, and several of the members of Tubaforum.net were there. Left to right: First is my orthopedic surgeon who is also one of my former band students from the 1990s and a trombone player in our community band, 2nd is the lead trombone from the community band, 3rd yours truly, and 4th a really nice guy with whom we had great conversations but never learned his name. He is probably the only true euphonium player in this group. Maybe I'll find out next year, but I intend to take my 184, as I should be fully healed from the knee replacement by then.

Welp....I was the only tuba who showed up yesterday for rehearsal....and it was glorious.



I don't mean for that sound as negative as it implies. I just enjoyed getting to play all of the solos and actually hear myself for once. After rehearsal I got quite a few compliments. Apparently I still know how to play.

One really good tuba player can balance a wind band.
Fortissimos sound more focused/bravura, and - of course - pianissimos are easier to control. Just as with other sections, technical passages are going to sound no better than the least capable player. If only one player understands how to phrase, the phrasing that one player does will not be heard.
