FS/FT: Scherzer Augsburg 5v F Tuba $3500
Hello all,
I am selling my beloved Scherzer Augsburg F Tuba, cir. 1970s(?). It is a big 4/4 F with a left hand operated 5th valve. The 5th valve has a unique wrap and is tuned like a long 3rd valve. The shank is not American or European, but somewhere in between. I've found that European pieces don't work at all in this instrument, but you can sort of jam an American piece in there and it will be airtight and won't rattle; It simply sticks out about a centimeter extra. It is raw brass, and the bell and bottom bow are rolled very thick, which gives it an extremely dark tone as well as making it quite impervious to (new) dents. I just had the bell and leadpipe polished for the first time, which removed (seemingly) decades of patina, and knocked off a bit of dullness that I had previously encountered with this instrument.
It plays exceptionally well in the mid to upper register between F bottom of the staff and C just above the staff. Above that it takes a fair bit of chops to sound focused and not thin and woofy, but that is also just my own issue as a player. Low C is pleasantly surprising on this tuba with 5+1. Everything below that is fine, and you can get a very nice, dark sound out of the instrument while still getting that bite if you put some air through it.
The valve action is splendid, I recently had the instrument chemically flushed and the valves aligned by Fleming Music in the Heights, and I shortly replaced the synthetic bumpers on the 1st and second valves with cork. Every slide moves like butter and have no dents or any issues whatsoever.
The tuba is in decent cosmetic condition. There are assorted minor dings all across the bell and throughout the bottom bow. There is one large major dent in the bottom bow, but it is purely cosmetic. There is a patch in the 1st valve tubing right near the valve, but it does not leak and doesn't seem to affect the playing at all.
There is no gig bag or case included with this instrument, because I never had one in the first place. I originally bought this instrument to learn F tuba in preparation for college, and to solo during high school. I did play it in a solo competition during high school in which I earned a perfect score but chose not to advance due to logistical reasons. Its one of my favorite instruments I've ever played and it's served me very well. I am looking to sell it because I am without a contrabass tuba due to unforseen circumstances, and I need one in order to continue my studies. I am looking for $3500, but I will also entertain trades (plus cash on my part if necessary) for any big 5v orchestral CC Tuba. However, if you have any horn you're interested in trading regardless of tuning/valves, feel free to reach out and we can have a chat. Located in Houston area. Pickup preferred, but willing to drive for the right buyer.

This looks like fun. I had a Scherzer Augsburg CC tuba for a while. Very nicely made, and I loved the sound and handling.bloke wrote: Fri Sep 11, 2026 9:12 pm cool-lookin' !![]()
