B&S Vented Rotors

Post by gocsick »

Does anyone know if you could order factory vented rotors from B&S? .. specifically during the Custom Music Perantucci era

My son's tuba has all 5 rotors vented and they are very well done.. trying to figure out if they are factory or after sale modification. If they were done aftermarket they must have been done off the instrument..

Just a curiosity.. Looking at previous for sale listings of B&S instructs very few mention venting and I don't see it listed on any of the Custom Music material.

As amateur as they come...I know just enough to be dangerous.

My old PT-6 had factory vented rotary valves.

Hopefully Mr. Tucci can weigh in on this.

My understanding is that B&S did not factory-vent their rotary valves, or at least did not do so consistently. There are technicians, Dana Hofer being one example, who have the equipment and process to vent rotors in a way that closely resembles factory work, so it is possible that a particular instrument was modified that way. That said, my understanding is that most rotor venting is typically done aftermarket with a drill and bit.

For reference, I own a 1991 B&S Rotor C that was not factory vented. I also know that the PT-6 previously owned by Bort was not factory vented either; that venting was added later as an aftermarket modification.

If you have the serial number email Bob Tucci he can give you better clarity than anyone here.

Hrmm. Ok, well, I thought it was.

Also, I think the #2 rotor (only) on my Neptune was vented, because that valve had a 2nd slide kicker attached to it.

I guess it all blurs together, it's been a little while.
