Wick 5L -- no longer needed, thanks for the responses

Post by Mary Ann »

Looking for a backup. Needs to have a smooth rim, otherwise don't care. Would prefer gold plate but not important.

This is the best price I find right now on one of these, but I don't know what "seller is currentlyaway" means. Hopefully he'll be back.

It's a better price than the one I got through Reverb and would gladly sell to you cheap, but my 94-year-old tuba friend bought it from me a few months before he died because of his shortness of breath due to congestive heart failure. I tried to buy his tuba and equipment from the family, but they decided to donate it all to a university in Oklahoma.

Here is another one that is in stock, but you may not want to pay that much.

I don't know those terms but the "regular" one. I actually want a duplicate "just in case." I am known to forget things and I'd rather have a spare in the glove compartment that is what I'm used to playing on.

I’ve had this thread in mind for a while but don’t think that I’ve got a standard / original 5L sitting unused in a draw, and even if I had then it being here in the UK would complicate things. What I can offer, and it isn’t much, are some suggestions:

# Doc is a member here and he’s imported Tubas from the UK. It might be worth reaching out to him to see if he has any ‘expert’ contacts who might supply a piece to you at a sensible price - of course shipping and tariffs can be a painful ‘extra’.

# Leaving a mouthpiece at home is a ‘disaster’ that can happen to nearly anyone, certainly I’ve witnessed folk turning up without a mouthpiece. My way to limit such an event is to carry spares, but as Wick 2’s (my preferred piece) don’t often become available for sensible money my spares are whatever will play reasonably well to get me out of a jam (for me that’s Wick 3’s and similar that have better availability than the Wick 2’s).

# I suggest that you consider whether, as a spare, you could tolerate another piece with a near 30.0 mm cup (like your 5L has). Of course you might already carry something near the Wick 5L as a tolerable spare, I don’t know whether that is what you already do or not. A Wick 4 is just 0.5 mm bigger, a Bach 30E has a 30.0mm cup and a Bach 25 has a 30.6 mm cup. The 30E might be used by physically smaller students, there are several educationalists on this forum who might help with supplying a second hand ‘Bach’ 30E - or 25 - at a reasonable price. As an aside I think that, somewhere, I’ve a German made copy of the 25 and iirc I quite liked it.

I’ve often got to be flexible in what I use and that does challenge my mindset; I’m learning to look at what I’ve got - or can easily have - and work out how it can be made to do (near enough) what’s needed.

Just some thoughts, which I offer in the hope that they might be helpful to you.

I have a 4L that I use on the Hagen, so don't want to keep it in the glove compartment.
For some reason the Bachs and I do not get along very well.
I can afford a new one, just trying not to :smilie8:

I have a 3SL in fine condition that I could use as a trade. Too wide for me.
Also have a Yamaha Jim Self I could trade, and a couple of Miraphone pieces. All too wide for my face.

There was a 5L on eBay.com that didn’t sell for $75 inc shipping. That’s not cheap, it’s but less than half the new price.

Might be worth contacting the seller … ?

If it’s tolerable to the OP then I’d suggest 4L (just 0.5 mm bigger) is a more desirable piece than a 5L. This thread leads me to wonder whether a poster above might have a spare 4L somewhere. https://www.tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php ... 55#p112855

Oh you. :)

I had started a reply yesterday and never submitted it.

Yes, I do have a 4L I could part with.

Thanks already have a 4L in use on the Hagen. It can't be two places at once, and -- for me -- it isn't going to work on the NStar. We just performed, twice, all seven movements of Hymn of the Highlands, and there are some amazing Eb tuba parts in that. Strathcarron was taken at warp speed tempo, too.

Oh well, if you’ve tried a 4L in the NStar and it doesn’t work for you then that’s that. There might still be the ‘unsold’ 5L from eBay.com, if you want to pursue it. Perhaps you still have your JK 8C and in case your Wick 5L is forgotten it (the JK 8C) can sit in your car’s glove box … something ‘ll work out for you.

Edit. Just spotted this on eBay UK and maybe they might ship to the USA: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/206151514460 ... R67Hk_-gZw

Nope, won't ship and I don't blame him. I probably wouldn't either.

But -- putting the JK in the glove compartment is an excellent idea and a whole lot cheaper than buying another Wick.

I’m glad to have been of assistance, and hope that that arrangement works out for you. 🙂

As a general comment: when there’s a particular rarely listed item that I want off of eBay I leave a search constantly running for it, ebay then notifies me when a matching item is listed.

There’s still a chance that, at some point in the future, someone here will offer you a Wick 5L.

I have an AT5U in decent / good shape, if you're interested. Not sure of the difference between the two.

Though the name has similarities, and they are both made by Wick, the AT5U appears to be very different from a 5L.
