OG Ultimate mouthpieces seem to sell out fairly quickly - ANYONE CARE TO SPECIAL ORDER EURO SHANK?
Thank-you for those who supported this new model by pre-paying for the very first run of OG Ultimate mouthpieces sight unseen.
mostly...
I this is an improved-throat (in my opinion) and even skinnier outside diameter version of the OG (3-piece stainless steel) mouthpiece, which I mostly designed for 6/4 size tuba use (a regular-deep mouthpiece with more definition in the sound than offered by quite a few other mouthpieces WITHOUT resorting to a shallower cup...ADDITIONALLY, it is NOT an "air hog"). It's also a good a possible alternative (somewhat similar in sonority, yet quite different in design) to the medium-depth cup "Imperial" model (whereby the OG Ultimate is a deeper cup than "medium"). It's also (even though a "regular deep" mouthpiece) a good mouthpiece for offering 4/4 - 5/4 size contrabass tubas a bit more "punch".
I'm now stocking them (and not asking for pre-orders).
The euro shank versions sell more slowly.
(Some tubas are ACTUALLY euro shank such as oem receivers on Holton 345 tubas and some really old King 1240/2141 receivers, but so many "euro" shanks (newer tubas) are what I personally refer to as "fake euro" (standard shank receivers which are interpolated outward an additional 1/8th to 1/4th inch (which actually receive STANDARD shank mouthpieces perfectly fine and without overshooting the choke point).
I'm about out of these mouthpieces again (have already hit up the machine shop making them for me)...but
...IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO ORDER A EURO VERSION, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW now...
bloke cash flow:
I don't like seeing stock (particularly silver-plated stock that tarnishes and I have to shine back up before shipping it) sitting around here for months prior to being sold. It's nice to receive it from the plater and have it go out to customers fairly quickly.
reminders:
- Shallowberger (amazing F cimbasso mouthpiece)
- Sellmansberg II (with a cup similar to the 30H/Helleberg II/Jacobs-and/or-early Helleberg cup, a RIM, THROAT, and BACK-BORE that I myself much prefer)
3-piece stainless steel mouthpieces:
ALL of that stuff is STILL IN STOCK and is being KEPT IN STOCK
(silver plated brass) OG ULTIMATE mouthpieces which are THREADED to fit the STAINLESS STEEL RIMS - got 'em !

Make it with a 30.5 mm rim, and I'll give it a go.
Which brings up a question -- if you stick a narrow rim on a wider cup, what ensues?

Okay, would a Shallowberger, with a euro, work good on a Cerveny BBb. It has a euro receiver. And then put a standard bass shank on, to peel paint with a F contrabass trombone?

That's awfully nice, but if you don't really need it, it's okay.Heavy_Metal wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2026 11:40 pm @bloke , if you need one more to complete your order. I'll step up.
It's just that I suspect the euro thing is sort of almost going out of style as far as putting those receivers on tubas (as I've remarked, some of the Euro receivers are actually just standard receivers which are extended out another eighth inch or so, so that they cover up enough of a Euro mouthpiece to look right, but whereby a standard shank mouthpiece doesn't bottom out), and mouthpieces with that shank size are moving considerably more slowly than regular standard shank mouthpieces. I'm glad to make them for those who really want them, but I prefer to not really get into stocking them. (Basically, I'm not really sure that too many people actually need them.)

1-minute clip using this mouthpiece on a 6/4 tuba with the gas pedal to the floorboard:
(against other brass, huge organ, aggressive timpanist, and amplified strings)
' should have been a bit cleaner, but I have not been sitting down and practicing on the tuba for quite some time.

I did in another thread, it's actually very redundant.Heavy_Metal wrote: Sun Mar 08, 2026 10:28 pm @bloke , if you can post or link to the entire piece, I'd love to hear it. It sounds great!
After that intro it's chorus verse chorus verse etc.
The arranger changed the brass parts a little bit for each chorus and verse, not a whole lot.

I find (careless storage habits
) that I currently (3-20-26) have 1 $TANDARD SHANK ONE-PIECE OG Ultimate in stock.
(I thought they were temporarily out...More available in a few short weeks.)
bloke code for mouthpiece shanks: (typically engraved in the throat area)
$ - standard shank
€ - larger-than-standard euro shank
£ - old/small British shank (roughly the same size as a bass trombone shank)

The person who would know would be James Ryan. If you would like to email him, put a period between his names (at least, that seems to be how all of the other people who work at that church have their emails oriented), and the church website is 2pc.orgHeavy_Metal wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 4:56 pm @bloke , I listened to this again- do you remember who the arrangers were on "Lift High the Cross" and "O Zion, Haste"? I'm working there again this next Sunday, they seem to broadcast both services on the internet. I've got the charts emailed and PDF form, they don't look like anything special, but they might sound special when everything is put together.

Thanks, @bloke - e-mail sent. I hope we have as good luck with these as we've had with the John Rutter Easter Hymn arrangement, which I first heard in one of your videos.

I don't think I've worked Easter Sunday since then at anywhere other than where I've been working (about 2 miles down the street from that place). I think I'm a pretty good fit for the place I've been playing every single Christmas midnight mass and every Easter since probably the year after that, because probably 60% of the stuff that we play there (brass quintet) features fairly High tessitura bass trombone parts, with only about 40% tuba parts.
As is obvious, the name of this place is Second Presbyterian Church, I play there a lot, but never anymore on Christmas and Easter.
The place where I AM working on those two particular days asks for me, they're very nice, they pay very well, and they have some really good food in between services.

Re: OG Ultimate mouthpieces seem to sell out fairly quickly - ANYONE CARE TO SPECIAL ORDER EURO SHANK?
There's a new batch in of complete OG Ultimate ($175) and threaded for rim OG Ultimate ($150} both in standard shank...
That said, three of the complete mouthpieces are already sold and one of the threaded for rims ones is likely sold as well... but there are still some.
For anyone who wants a regular-large size contrabass tuba mouthpiece - and is tired of working their butt off with whatever they're currently using - this might be for them.
That said, it's not the very "prettiest" sounding contrabass tuba mouthpiece that I offer. That one would be the Symphony model, and it's possibly (??) more appropriate for 4/4 and maybe even 5/4 size tubas... depending on the sonic characteristics of the tuba itself, along with the type of sound that an individual player is striving to achieve.
If I get a long enough list of request for euro shank, I'll have some of those run, or I might eventually order a limited run of them anyway, expecting them to sell very slowly.
(I expect that the euro shank thing has become a bit passé, and I also suspect that more players are deciding than an offset from the choke point (that far back) may not be the greatest thing...?? Finally, I'm wondering if some players are also figuring out that some of these newer tubas that receive euro shank mouthpieces - with a good "fit" appearance - are actually what I personally refer to as "fake euro", whereby they are simply standard shank receivers which are extended out farther.)
Though these are probably considered to be boutique mouthpieces (as several dozen or perhaps a couple hundred per year are produced vs. several thousand (such as with Conn Helleberg's and other production mmouthpieces) please note that I'm keeping my pricing not too much above the pricing of typical production mouthpieces, in order to make them more accessible.
If some of you are band directors and would like to buy a batch of them, reach out to me and I'll quote you a batch price per (which will offer you an even lower price). I prefer that this be a minimum of six, please.
With my 6/4 tuba (and even my compact 4/4 tuba, which tends to produce a zippier sound) I'm using this mouthpiece. It offers more clarity with the 6/4 and plays up the natural sonic tendencies of the 4/4 (offering me some variety in what I can produce on the job). It also requires considerably less work to play than some of these modern-day giant-throated mouthpieces (and if I dare say so: with better results and quicker accomplishment of mastering difficult passages). I believe I've learned that larger/epic mouthpiece throats really don't relate very much to audibility, and if you've heard any of the recordings I've made with this mouthpiece using my large tuba (with very little difficulty in hearing my tuba in the midst of bloud orchestras, loud organs, and loud timpani), perhaps you would agree.
On the one piece version, the #2 profile rim slides across the indention above the chin easily, which has eliminated annoying embouchure shifts for me, and others claim the same.
