Happy Tuba Tuesday. The Museum features a Besson, Stratford Model 588, BB flat tuba, 3 piston, c.1959.

Serial #: 293712

Bell Diameter 12 7/8”, Bore Size .689”, Height 31.5”.

“BESSON / STRATFORD / MADE IN ENGLAND” on bell.

I suspect that essential the same instrument had a different model name depending whether Boosey and Hawkes or a Besson was engraved on the bell. I’ve a similar Eb Regent and can confirm that these compact student instruments are very satisfying to play and with the right driver they certainly knock out some fine music too. These particular Tubas were made in England but I think that a lower priced - and lower quality - range were imported from what were then soviet states.
