Holton Medium Eb - PRICE DROP TO $200 - SOLD

Post by Tubajug »

SOLD

I'm selling a Holton Medium (31" tall, 15" bell) Eb tuba. I haven't looked up the serial number, but I'm guessing it would be from the early 1900s (20s or 30s). It would make a great Frankentuba project. I built a 5 valve Eb from a King Eb this size and I love it.

This one looks like someone put some money into making it playable. It has new felts and corks. The buttons have been replaced, but are mismatched. Two look to be sousaphone buttons and the third looks like it came from a baritone. The valve guides look newer, too. It's in tune at A440 with the main slide all the way in. The receiver takes a smaller shank mouthpiece, but I was able to play it with a Blessing 18 put in part way. It has a very nice, robust sound. Very nimble and responsive. I was having fun playing around on it last night when I got it out to take the photos. The main slide moves, but the others are stuck. Valves have wear, but not as much as I was expecting.

It does have evidence of past repairs (missing/moved/replaced braces), and there are a few cracks in the bell, including a few splits in the rim (buy my York Master bell and replace it with that!). There are relatively few dents, some solder spots to clean up, etc. and it's obviously very tarnished. It could also use a bath.

I'm selling to reduce stuff we have to move with, and I don't need another project. I'm now asking $200. I'm open to offers, as well. Packing and shipping will be at the buyer's expense via UPS Ground. It's located in Lincoln, NE if you happen to be going this way and don't want to ship it. I'd be willing to drive a couple hours, but not much more for something like this. Contact me via PM or jordanhluke (at) yahoo (dot) com.

I did exactly that. Here is my Holtonish medium Eb. It started out life as a low pitch Holton Medium Eb. It is a 3+1 Martin valveset from 1903 and a bugle from somewhat later Holton Bugle. It is a fun horn, but has all the wonderful tuning tendencies of an early 1900s American Eb -lots of alternate fingerings.

Price Drop to $200. I know the cracks in the bell are a deal-breaker for many folks.
