SOLD:Big Mouth Brass silver 6/4 CC, w/ bag and hard case, $3,250

Post by arpthark »

Sold, thanks!

This is a Big Mouth Brass (BMB) 6/4 CC in silver plate. Five valves with the fifth valve dependent, located in the fourth valve tubing.

These tubas were made in China at the behest of Dick Barth, who based the design on a cut Holton 6/4 CC, so it exhibits some of those same intonation tendencies (flat third partial, flat fifth partial). With a couple alternate fingerings it’s pretty workable, and it has a big, blossomy sound that you expect from a BAT.

It incurred some bell damage which I have rolled out, so there is evidence of some ripples there (shown), otherwise it’s basically dent-free. All slides move and the fifth valve rubber band linkage is very light to the touch.

Included are an MTS style hard case, top loading gig bag, and a lifetime supply of horse mane rubber bands for the fifth valve linkage.

Asking $3,250 and will not consider shipping, but can drive several hours from Connecticut. Preferred pickup around New England or in the NYC Metro area.

Thanks!
Blake

I'd like to get this just to stick the 5th valve where it needs to go. I have had a Holton (which Dick had this copied from) with and without the 5th valve, and there is no appreciable difference, so moving it would make the horn more "conventional" while not really changing anything in the way it plays.

The price is great when you compare what your dollars get as compared with playing Ds and Gs 13… stupid-low.

I am rather sorry that I don't have the funds…

Bump!

Thanks. I’ve thought about that project. The way the rotor is routed would mean removing a lot of material from one of the connecting tubes that is brazed to the rotor. I think Lee Stofer tried something similar and attempted to use the existing rotor but didn’t find it practical due to these limitations.

It would definitely make the horn more useful for those who prefer 235, but honestly, this thing has about a yard of pull on the fourth valve slide so that mitigates the issue somewhat.

Also will get back to you shortly @tubatodd.
