York Monster Sousaphone in BBb for sale

Post by TheBerlinerTuba »

Hello TubaForum,
I’m selling my 6/4 York Monster Sousaphone, built around 1932–33 with an original unpolished matt silver finish.
It sounds every bit as commanding as it looks—rich, powerful, and full of character.

The valves (0.748" bore) have solid compression. I’ve always used Hetmann or Ultrapure oil to help extend their lifespan. Everything works well with no playing issues. The only quirk is that the low F in the bass clef tends to sag a little when the horn is cold, but once warmed up it plays in tune without a problem.

Some parts are not original: the tuning slide has been trimmed, the neck replaced, and the guard wires look like later additions. There are also a few small dings here and there, as you’d expect from an instrument of this age. The work was done before it came into my ownership and I've done nothing but oil the valves and grease the slides.

It’s been a fantastic companion over the years and served me extensively in my orchestra’s big band. Unfortunately, it’s simply a bit too large and heavy for me now, and it’s a shame to let it sit unused.

I don’t have a case for it, though there are gig bag options available that fit.

Located in Berlin, Germany.
Price: €3,800
Shipping possible—happy to discuss details.

I have one as well from 1928. These big beasts are worth every penny. Someone is going to get a real gem!

I have one of these and LOVE the sound! I just posted elsewhere on the thread today that I'm trying to figure out either a hard case or soft case solution for it and haven't found a great option
