This is a great playing 6/4 CC tuba. It is one of perhaps only 30 that were produced at the request of Arnold Jacobs. Its serial number dates it as being built in 1975. The bore size is 0.750/.810, bell diameter is 20". It is in very good condition for its age with much of the original factory applied lacquer still present. The valves were replated sometime before I got it, and the compression is very good. I really enjoy playing it, however dealing with a 6/4 size tuba is becoming more and more difficult for me as age starts to take its toll. It plays easily with a huge presence and clarity of sound. It has the large valve buttons.
No longer for sale.

Curious as to the history here. I've never heard it. Did Jacobs ask them to be produced for students? Backups for him? Because he felt they should exist in the world? I've heard of a lot of York copies, but never these.
Re: Original Factory Holton 6/4 CC
For a number of years Holton sponsored the Chicago Symphony Brass Quintet(s), concurrent to making copies of individual players' horns, or "symphonic" horns that were endorsed by the players themselves. A good example of this is the Farkas horns Holton developed and marketed with not a lot of change or development for many many years. Holton certainly made the trumpets horns and trombones as production instruments, but upon needing a tuba for Jacobs, they came up with one or two for starters in CC. Over time, students at Northwestern would occasionally order (with Jacobs' assistance) a Holton in CC. I do not know how many were made in CC, I would have said that it was less than a couple dozen between 1955 and 1975. Holton also started to build the now-345 model in BBflat for sales to schools and such. Many many more were made in BBflat than CC. Each of the CC tubas made were "one offs" where the BBflat horns seemed to have more consistency amongst themselves only because there were far more made, perhaps a couple hundred or more in 3 & 4 valve versions.tubanh84 wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 10:25 am Curious as to the history here.
