Sousaphone: Cleveland Jr by The H.N White Co.

Post by jjaaviierr »

Just wanted to share a fun find from earlier this year—back in January, I was lucky enough to pick up a Cleveland Junior sousaphone. Big thanks to Brandon (if you’re on here!) for reaching out and letting me take this one home.

The horn had been stored away since 1999 after being serviced, and what really caught my attention was how complete it is. Despite some dents and missing lacquer, every piston—and even the bell—still has matching serial numbers. No mods or non-original parts that I can see. Only thing missing is the lyre screw… and I think I’ll survive without that 😅.

From what I’ve read, these were considered student models, but the build quality is solid. The valve action is smoother than I expected, and the weight distribution feels great. I tried digging up an original brochure or catalog on this model through the H.N. White Co. site, but didn’t find anything—so I decided to mock up a little wall poster for myself.

Planning to overhaul it in the distant future and either use it for fun gigs or hang it as a conversation piece. Either way, it’s a keeper.

There are several HN White catalogs here: https://www.saxophone.org/museum/public ... seumType/1

I didn't see a catalog page on the model 630 (Cleveland had a model 629 BBb, and American Standard had a model 230 BBb), but I didn't look through all the catalogs. The model 630 is mentioned on the 1962 King Schedule of Prices.

Thank you for sharing. I’ve spent a good couple hours on that site my wife even knows about it now 😅 a really good site for information. Below is actually something I found but it’s only a piece of the entire page. I reached out to the person who post it on fb. Hopefully they have the entire page.
