About five days before this, Mrs. bloke asked, "Aren't you going to practice that solo?"
I told her that I know it, but she suggested that I practice it anyway.
...so I ran through it a couple of times each night.
bottom line: Maybe (??) I should have practiced it, but I doubt that it would have been much better.
I probably played it about as well as I deserved to have played it.
I was on the second day of a three-week "sick", but (just before the concert, at a gas station) I found some BC powder (aspirin + caffeine) plus a quart-size cup of "extra-caffeine" coffee...so I was doctored-up pretty good.

These concerts, this year, are thrown together in one rehearsal.
This piece received one read-through, with no going-back-over.
I noticed that - until the last few days before - the accompaniment parts to this piece weren't uploaded on to the musicians' webpage.
It was apparent (due to questions being asked) that the parts were found on their stands, and were being seen by most for the first time.
It's also aurally apparent that a few people got "lost" momentarily, but quickly found their places again.
Moreover, this brass choir accompaniment is pretty tough, and deserved at least one more read-through (had there been time), prior to the performance.
I was puzzled by the accompaniment melody (at the beginning) being 8va basso; I later checked the score/part and the part is written an 8ve higher...whatev'.
The tempo was a bit brisk (compared to my concept), but - well - we're expected to "go with the flow", yes?

to summarize: "It is what it is, everyone did what they could do under difficult circumstances, and I appreciated the chance to give it a go."

I put it about where it sounded right to me in the scale...but - then - realized that it would be a piccolo trumpet subsequently entering "pianissimo" with their own "high (concert) A"...so I subtly raised the pitch...I believe I chose correctly.

That was really enjoyable, Joe.

I played for decades with trumpets who used Crown Royal bags to attenuate the highs a bit. At least it makes a good excuse to buy a bottle.

Really nice performance, Joe. Tone quality, dynamics, musicality, intonation, control of air very good. It doesn't get much better than that. You deserve a full orchestra. Hope you get a chance to do that.
