Alex 163 Bell

Post by Kctuba »

I’ve seen lots of information regarding miraphone bells being ordered from over the pond, etc. I know I’m about a couple months late due to tariffs and what not, but has anyone here ever attempted to contact Alexander about a replacement bell for a 163? I just acquired an older 163 that plays well, but the bell has definitely been manhandled over its 50-60 years of life. I know it wouldn’t be cheap, but I’m more concerned about whether they even do that at all. The other obvious question is does anyone have any recommendations on what might work as a replacement bell?. And having played Alex‘s for many many years, I know that using anything else Will definitely change the color of the instrument, but I feel I at least need to look into my options.

As a lay person and not a proper repair shop, I have been met with radio silence despite my numerous attempts to contact the folks at Alexander. You might ask proper channels like the Horn Guys if they can liaise for you.

I'd like a replacement bell for my Alex 157, too, but one of the older/vintage 14" bells. Don't know how I am going to manage to get one of those.

It appears Wichita Band is the place to contact!

I posted this reply in the "Wanted to Buy" section.

Baltimore Brass might still have the Alex 163 bell that I traded for some repair work (when Dave Fedderly still owned the business). If they still have the bell it is yellow brass and in good shape. I bought it around 30 years ago from someone who had a new bell put on his Alex (I could never figure out why). I bought it when I was playing a lot and I thought that it would be good to have a spare bell in case my bell Alex was damaged.

They may have to dig through a bunch of stuff to find the bell. Check into it and best of luck. Also, please let me know if they still have the bell and if you get it.
