Re: Conn-Selmer to shut down Eastlake

Tofu,
Thank-you for a very insightful commentary! From a tuba standpoint, it seems that the glory days of American tuba manufacture was during the 1920's and particularly the 1930's. After WWII, there were some very good tubas made, but they were never quite the same, and company buyouts and other ...

Re: Quality BBb Tubas

First, I wish to respond to a comment by Mr. Denney, concerning the Josef Lidl Company, which I have had various dealings over the past 20+ years. I asked the current Josef Lidl CEO how, if they were not using old Cerveny tooling, were they making tubas so similar in design that they even share some ...

Re: Where can I find a Lidl LBB 701

I bought three Josef Lidl tubas in Cincinnati last month enroute to the US Army Band Conference. Buddy Rogers/ Willis Music was unable to attend, and I took three, so this fine brand would be represented.

I sold the Lidl 684 CC at the Conference, and sold & shipped the Lidl 701 BBb this past Friday ...

Re: Meinl-Weston 2000 "Warren Deck" Handmade 5/4 CC Tuba $10k (Syracuse, NY/FB)

I'm surprised, too. I would expect a 2000 in excellent condition with MAW valves & Cronkhite bag would be priced in the $12k- $14k range, depending upon how cosmetically new it looks. I haven't played a bad M-W 2000 yet.

Re: Tuba shipping gone wrong

Tofu,
There's now an additional strike against UPS. Several months ago, our local UPS terminal closed it's customer service office, meaning that I can no
longer deliver a shipment (of any kind) to my local terminal. If I do ship anything with UPS, I drop it off at Ace Hardware in town, and then it ...

Re: Tuba shipping gone wrong

Some years ago now, I shipped a new Kanstul tuba via UPS to North Dakota. The bell was crunched. UPS denied any sort of claim, claiming that it was not sufficiently packed. I spoke to the local UPS Field Representative, who came to my shop, and I showed him in person how I pack tubas. He told me ...

Re: Opinions on Lidl LBB-701?

The Josef Lidl LBB-701 BBb tuba is a very well-designed tuba, listed by Josef Lidl as a 1/2 size instrument. For our purposes in the US, we've always referred to it as a 3/4 BBb tuba. I have played one in up to a 40-piece concert band, where the conductor (a low brass player) and the bass trombonist ...

Re: Best Bb tuba for up to $12k?

Hamertones,
I would suggest doing some traveling. The Midwest Clinic in Chicago is December 17-19, and the exhibit hall will likely have 250 different BBb tubas that you can try out.

February 18-21 is the United States Army Band's annual Tuba-Euphonium Workshop at Ft. Myer, Virginia, where the ...

We just received a Melton 45S-LP F-tuba on consignment. We clean and detail out every instrument we sell, so it will be available as soon as we can get it ready. It comes with a gig bag, and the horn-in-bag fits into the accompanying red Melton metal-sided travel case. This tuba has traveled with a ...

Re: Best Bb tuba for up to $12k?

I have a very fine large BBb tuba, a Conn 26/27J tuba available for under 12K. It has piston valves, four front short-action pistons, an upright bell, recording bell and all three cases. You have to play it to fully appreciate how good it is. The serial number indicates that it is from 1935, a very ...

Re: WTB: Geib style mouthliece, Euro shank

I have USA-made Stofer Geib mouthpieces, in Euro and American shank sizes,
no stainless steel, not Chinese, not a huge budget, and being CNC copies of
the original Conn Geib, not "improved" they are more than Geib-ish. Today,
my mouthpieces are the Geib. Instead of PM, I'd appreciate a phone call or ...

Re: New Rudolf Meinl Tubas

Indeed, BBb tubas are being taken seriously again. I have no rotor Rudolf Meinl tubas on order,
only the piston-valve models. If you are serious about acquiring a Rudolf Meinl rotor tuba, I
can import a rotary 3/4 BBb or CC, 4345 rotor CC, standard 4/4 BBb or CC, a Bayreuth model BBb,
or standard 5 ...

New Rudolf Meinl Tubas

I'd like to announce that I have four Rudolf Meinl piston valve tubas ordered, which I'm expecting to arrive in November.

The tubas consist of one 5/4 BBb, one 4/4 BBb, and two 4/4 CC's, lacquered, with Kariso cases. Between the cost of the
instruments and freight and tariffs, which is anybody's ...

Re: Rudy 4/4 CC getting a "glow up"

TubaTodd,
Rudi and I were not really in touch with each other for a couple of years, but that suddenly changed this summer - I ordered and promptly received a couple of new leadpipes for the 3/4 CC tuba, and some mouthpieces.

As of today, I sent a 50% deposit, and Rudi Jr. is preparing four piston ...

Re: Ergonomics: Where the heck does my left hand go?

Todd,
From reading your post, I am now assuming that by "4+1 CC", you are not referring to a 4-rotor tuba with a left-hand 5th rotor, but a 4-piston + 5th rotor tuba. Having played a number of Rudolf Meinl CC tubas over the past 45 years (I can't believe it's been that long!), I find that if you ...
