Re: Eastman Marketing - 836 versus 834
This thread might be shifting a bit, but I consider pitch and response first. I tend to be able to adjust MP or approach enough to get different colors if I'm not having to work too hard for pitch. I agree every horn has a quirk in some aspect of playing, and we all have to find the trade offs we ...

Re: Sellmansberger Symphony vs. OG Cup
The stainless OG has a little more burn/focus/clarity forward type sound, while the symphony is a little rounder/prettier.
I thought this was merely due to the shank on the 3 piece. This is probably the opposite direction I want to go if it is the cup too since I am a more aggressive player ...

Re: Tuba Shank Size?
My old DS had an "in between receiver" that I generally used American shank on for everything except Giddings pieces (needed euro).

Re: "Mass/weight changes how a brass instrument mouthpiece plays an instrument."
I agree with this. I think the PT-50 and PT-50+ are equally as hard to play on. 😂
I don't know if it was my two specific mouthpieces or what. I'd never had much of a preference for megatone or + or whatever people were calling them mouthpieces, EXCEPT my 50 and 50+.

That being said, I'm using the OG ultimate lately on my 2155 (with a XD/Profundo style rim). I'd love to use a standard depth symphony/OGU but this horn behaves (pitch wise ...

Re: Kalison Tuba Mouthpiece recommendations
I found the Sellmansberger Symphony with the not deeper / XD / Profundo rim was the ticket for my old DS. I image the OG ultimate that I'm using now on my 2155 would have been just as good of a choice.
The DS (at least my example) was not a particularly mouthpiece picky tuba.

This would be my shortlist:
Bloke's new brass ultimate grand orchestral MP, especially the threaded rim version if you need/want a different rim choices than the standard #2 style rim he has on the 1 piece variety.
The Sellmansberger Symphony, 3 piece stainless.
Laskey 30H (or the variants with ...

Re: Insight on a Wick 3L?
I used one through HS. It has a pretty open throat. Internal diameter is about like the 24AW, but with a better rim (like the countout of the 18, though different internal/opening size). It is a solid choice. I had a 7B, and I remember the Wick playing more open / darker / overall better for me (I ...

Re: FS: Kalison DS CC $4,000
I owned a DS for many years, I bought it from bloke. It was a nice horn that served me well for about 10 years or so. Very much like a 188 size with a better low register. Pitch was very workable. VERY nice valves!

Re: Miraphone 181 Family Discussion
I seem to remember a larger and smaller bel.canto around 2011 (I think the larger was a bel canto 181, and the smaller the 381). The slightly smaller one played great at Mid West when I tried it years ago.

Re: F or CC tuba for $3,000
This is a long shot but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a CC or F tuba being sold for around the 3k mark by a music store or any other source with a business license. It would be purchased by a school and thus would have to be purchased from somewhere with a business license.

A Hagen 496 might fit in your budget.
The Eastman 825vg does as well.

I use 1, but have found on my current and former F tubas, that high G above the staff is a no go if the horn is not clean or in proper alignment. Usually the first thing to indicate time to flush it out.
