Re: Getting Older

The Mack Brass TU422 is a well-regarded YBB621 version with larger bore and 16 inch bell. Sorta splits the difference between the 103 and the 2341. Under $2600 brand new. Here's the link - https://mackbrass.com/tu422l-3%2F4-bbb-tuba .

Re: Getting Older

I'm very happy with my King 2341. I'm sure the Eastman equivalent would do the trick for you, too. Going one click smaller, consider the Olds 99-4, the Bach Mercedes, and the Conn 5J.
Happy shopping.

I've been messaging with this fellow, he confirmed that it's a CC Tuba.
Seems like a good guy.

Re: tonight's (ALL: electric bass) four eclectic set lists (6 - 10 PM)

I like that set list, Joe.
My little folk/country/gospel/old rock trio has done several of them, but we lean more heavily into Gordon Lightfoot, CCR, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson,
Roger Miller, Kris Kristopherson, the Everly Brothers, Peter Paul and Mary, etc. Our rhythm guitar player is very ...

Re: King 2341 Mouthpiece Recs

On my newer style 2341, after working with a half dozen assorted pieces, I've landed on my Perantucci PT-88. I use it for everything - concert band, solos, Octoberfest, quintets. It gives fantastic low range power and plenty of high range accuracy. For my mouth and my style, it's what I choose ...

Re: Gig bag for Holton BB 345

Wessex says the correct bag for their BBb Prokofiev 6/4 tuba is model B800, here's the link -https://us.wessex-tubas.com/products/tuba-gig-bags?variant=40047455043764 It's the same bag I used with my BBb345. To be sure measure the bell and overall height of your tuba.
Here's the page on their ...

Re: Gig bag for Holton BB 345

When I had my 345 I used the Wessex bag made for their 345 clone. Minimal protection but very sturdy for backpack carry. I was happy with it
Good luck in your search.

Re: Have you ever sold a tuba that...

Not a tuba, but headed that way with a guitar.
When my dad passed away almost 20 years ago I was gifted his early 60's Gibson ES335. This guitar is really beyond me and I know a mess of professionals past and present prefer these. I monkey around with her every now and then, but I'm no lead guitar ...

Re: Who was your teacher?

Most of my tuba studies have been with people you wouldn't know, being from out-state Minnesota and a small Christian college near Chicago.
Elementary - Raymond Blake, fine violinist and vocalist
Jr. High - Sonja Rehbein, low brass player
Sr. High - Richard Foley, US Army Band and trombonist with ...

By the way, Wade - the last school in which I taught had that Screamers album, and I played the heck out of it. Before I left I recorded it to cassette and still have it. Wonderful music, fabulous low Brass!

Re: How many tubas and euphoniums does a 50 or 60 piece wind band really need?

My buddy Paul and I have played tuba together in a couple of community bands for well over 30 years. We are both former HS band directors, for what that's worth. I completely love playing with him. We have different strengths that mesh well. From time to time we've had various others in our section ...

Re: Miraphone 191 5th valve?

The gold brass 191 I owned did have a factory 5th valve tuned to a flat whole step, and I did find it useful on those low, low notes. It also had a factory 2nd valve kicker, which I found mostly dubious since the horn had such beautiful intonation. Then again, my aging ears can't hear grass grow at ...

Re: What did you play today?

I'm pretty fortunate that my church seems to enjoy (or at least put up with) a variety of instruments and styles. In the past month I've played for offertory - euphonium in a brass quintet, trumpet in a trumpet trio, and Irish penny whistle in a duet with a young violinist lady, accompanied by ...

Re: "I don't like pistons/rotors."

I'm no professional, nor do I play for anything "important". I just play a fair variety of instruments and I play a lot. I'm not intending to argue, discredit, or anything else, just feel like sharing my preferences.
I currently have both rotary and piston tubas and a rotary tenor tuba. I grew up on ...
