Re: Where to Study the Tuba?

I remember waiting outside the door to go into the audition room for the New York Philharmonic (NYP) 1979 audition. I talked to the lady that the NYP had posted outside the door. She told me that they had 300 letters of inquiry from throughout the world in response the NYP ad in the "International ...

That must have been not long after I sold Brass Arts Unlimited to Dave. The shop was mine until August of 1998.

These are photos of me over 45 years playing the tuba du jour.

Re: Circular breathing

My previous comment is not meant to belittle anyone who has mastered circular breathing. Though I never mastered it, I had 6.1-liter vital lung capacity and could do most of what I needed knowing how to select places to breathe that would not distort a musical phrase. Though circular breathing did ...

Re: The MW 2141 Eb

25 years ago, I purchased the earlier version of the Meinl Weston 5 valved Eb tuba and, despite troublesome intonation, I plated my 50th birthday recital on it to very good reviews. The tuba had a superb sound and even response in all registers. The open Bb on the 2nd line of the staff was very flat ...

Oh thank you. Now..tell me about these 3 lovelies.
One was a 17" bell and did not produce enough sound and the other 2 were stuffy and not very resonant.

If you really want to know about my Eb tubas, here they are as best I can remember:

- 3 Yamaha non-compensating Eb tubas (not in succession). My first was when my teacher, Paul K. came back from a Philadelphia Orchestra tour to Japan and brought 3 back. He thought it was time for me to learn how to ...

Re: My Tuba & I, Post Yours & You

My list of tubas I owned and played over my 45 years of playing looks like the inventory of either Dillon Music or Baltimore Brass Company. Here they are as best I can remember.

- V. F. Cerveney CC tall model purchased from Walter Sear.
- CC Sonora tuba.
- Alexander 4 rotary valved CC tuba.
- H. N ...

Re: Post Your Group and Section Photos Here

Below is a photo of my section for the 45 years I performed. I am not meaning to be egotistical. As one who was symphonically trained for orchestral playing, I expected to be the only player of my instrument.

In the orchestra, part of playing the tuba as it is with playing all other instruments ...

Re: Das Kaiser, ja?

During my 45-year playing career, I played 2 Kaiser CC tubas at different times, a V. F. Cerveny and a 5/4 Rudolph Meinl. I loved both of them but, as a freelance artist, I found a good middle of the road 4/4 tuba got me you everywhere I needed to go. Your Miraphone 186 is that type of tuba. It will ...

Re: The best...

The best F tuba is an Eb

I agree 100%!!!! I played Eb tuba as my bass tuba for 43 years, ever since Paul Krzywicki brought 3 of Yamaha's early Eb tubas back from a tour of Japan. It sounds more like a tuba than some of the German rotary valved F tubas did and was much less expensive. My ...

Parting With Personal Tuba Music Collection

After 45 years of tuba study, performance and private teaching, I have retired and wish to pass my accumulation of tuba music on to any serious student, educator and/or performer that would like to have it and put it to good use.

The collection has not and will not be itemized. It includes, but is ...

Re: York Monter EEb Tuba Customized

That was my MW CC tuba that rapidly sold through Baltimore Brass Company. The York Monster EEb tuba is totally my design, but, since I had no shop space during the period, I had the Bob Pallansch assemble it from my parts. The York is everything I wanted in a bass tuba, a HUGE York sound, great ...
