Re: Miraphone 181 Family Discussion

Side note, I'm not sure if Alan Baer ever had much to do with the 1281, but he did have some early input on the 1291. I met him years ago, and he gave me an earful about how Miraphone asked for his help to design the 1291, so he built them a great tuba... which they promptly ignored and said that ...

Re: Strobe Tuner Repair?

In my distant memory, what you’re asking for sounds like what some ham radio friends 50 years ago called oscillators. I don’t have any source for it, but maybe that will help your search.

Re: How many tubers are euphoniums does a 50 or 60 piece wind band really need?

It depends on the rep. If you’re playing only old rep without divisi in tuba or euphonium, one works fine. But even the Hunsberger arrangement of festive overture published in 1965 has divisi in the euphonium.

For modern rep, I’ve seen pieces (Pete Meechan’s Korn Symphony, for example) that has 2 ...

Re: Bass trombone mouthpiece

I had a conversation with Greg Black at a conference when I asked him if he could make one of his bass trombone mouthpieces with a wider rim. He said “I can now”and explained that previously, the chuck on his lathe couldn’t take stock big enough for a wider rim.

I liked the piece, but hated the ...

Re: Screw-On Bell to Fit Tuba in Small Car

If you're not picking up someone else and taking them to the jobs where you're playing your F tuba, I'm going to make the assumption that you use bags (as do most tuba players) and suggest that you set the instrument (upright in its bag) upright on the floor of your passenger seat and seat belt it ...

Re: POLL: Holton 6/4 BB-flat model BB345 tuba - 5th valve?

A flat half-step 5th valve might be nice for those b-naturals. When I had my Holton I recall needing a long pull on 4 for that note played 4-2.

I have a couple of professional quality mics that I bought a long time ago when a lot more money was flowing in and things didn't cost as much. I would like to know about some type of adapter whereby a traditional type of microphone can be used with things like phones and computers. I'm pretty ...

I thought I was possibly going to be playing Pictures this upcoming year, but it was just one thing that was tossed out there before they settled on the rep. I began playing the ox cart solo with my 321 and then with a huge.M-W - back-and-forth. Neither particularly play better in tune, but ...

Viola is like euphonium in ways beyond the jokes. Played timidly, they are both “meh”. Played assertively, they can sing.

I seen the, 4 times, and had post show hangs 3 times. Will be seeing them again next week in New Jersey. Herr Branstötter has never made the hangs, while Herr Gansch, Professor Paul, and Zoltan Kiss have been quite social.

I’m looking forward to hearing them again.

Regardless of anyone's special cause - whether right, wrong, nutty, or sane, this is why - sadly - I will never go to that city again, and why I mostly avoid cities. Most have become dangerously chaotic, and particularly during celebrations and gatherings. Seemingly, those who run so many cities ...

Re: Embouchure shifts

Trumpet/trombone players (I suspect) do shifts, YET they are miniscule/unnoticeable (to themselves as well as others) because they are so small.

Trombone players certainly do shift, sometimes several times across the range. The strategy I’ve heard from some of the best is to have an overlap ...

Wow. And that person was on the board. The middle movement of the York is quite nice and I'll see how my horn player feels about it. I think we could do it.

The Stevens is also quite nice, and I think I have a euphonium player who would be tickled to play the tbone part.

Interesting that the Wilder doesn't attract me that much. I ...

Does anybody know where is some kind of list of pieces for horn, tuba, and piano? I have a willing and able horn player, could likely hire a pianist, and would like to find out what is out there that is in my "possibly we could hack through this for fun" range.

If you add trombone, John Stevens ...

I see a lot of positive comments about the 496. I'm glad Miraphone has another apparent commercial success.
One of these days I’m going to make good on my threat bring my 496 to blokeplace to get you to take the dents out of the bottom bow. And to find where I want to move to in America.

When I bought my Hagen 496, I wanted to like the 495 (4/4) but it was a stinker. I hope the 494 is better, but I haven’t played one.
