TrumCor Mute problems

I recently got a TrumCor Stealth practice mute. I have trouble getting notes to speak and can hardly get notes below the staff to speak at all. Would it help to put some shims on the mute to give a little more clearance at the bell throat. I haven't tried this yet. As it is now, the mute is mostly useless.
