K9 units do such great work. I’m friends with our sheriff (1,000,000 plus population) county and they have an amazing group of dogs. 10 GSH for the K9 units, 3 blood hounds for search and rescue, 3 therapy dogs for victims and maybe 18 scent dogs (lots of beagles) for drug sniffing. Every week the K9 dogs find and take out perps and the bloodhounds have been just outstanding. In the last couple months alone, several younger adults in severe mental distress with suicidal intentions that purposely hid, found two very young kids (5 year olds) alone & lost in the woods for close to 48 hours in 10 degree overnight weather and 6-8 folks with dementia that had wandered away from homes or care facilities overnight and out into the cold. They even located a retired veteran suffering from PTSD - service dog that had gotten spooked by a loud explosion and ran off. Found several miles away. The county States Attorney’s office last year got a therapy dog (a black lab) to comfort very young children who have been the victim of child abuse for when they come to the SA’s office or in court chambers. That has proven to be incredibly successful for such a stressful event for these kids. The dogs get treated really well and often adopted by their handlers when the dogs retired. The blood hounds preferred treat after they find someone is double cheeseburger at McDonald’s. The photos of those guys chomping on their cheeseburgers are hysterical. It’s as if they are savoring a gastronomical delight of the highest order.
