5/4 BBb 5-valve creature $3950 SOLD

Post by Sam Gnagey »

Here's a BBb that I put together for myself to play in Brass Band, and played until I swithed to baritone horn to fill a vancancy in that section. It could be considered either small 5/4 or large 4/4 size. It plays very well in tune. The bore size is 0.687/.689" (17.5mm). Bell diameter is 19". It's 38" tall. The bottom bow, branches and tuning slide are from a Yorkmaster BBb that was made in Germany for York in the Boehm and Meinl Plant (now Nirschl).
It has the "Scottsbright" finish. You can see it pictured next to my British bariton horn for size comparison. No case or mouthpiece included.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to make the bell? It’s a nice looking/well proportioned horn.

The main tuning slide looks uncomfortably close to the bottom bow. Did you play on a stand? Does it get dicey in a lap accidentally pushing the tuning slide in?

The bell is from a 5/4 marching tuba.
