I was in college in the mid-to-late 90s and a member of TUBA then. My studio professor had a full cassette tape set (To my recollection, there were between 20 to 25 tapes) of all the performances from the 1990 ITEC in Sapporo, Japan. (Not pirated or anything. The set box and all the tapes had the 1990 ITEC conference logo).
I especially remember and liked it because it had the live recording of Roger Bobo world-premiering John Stevens’s
“The Liberation of Sisyphus.”
I honestly don’t remember if there were any more recorded conference sets or not in the studio.

Was it just that particular conference that had a recorded set, or was that something that TUBA used to do for conferences that ITEC stopped? If so,when?

Since the itea crowd is so interested in both diversity and their students competing in competitions, I believe competitions between these ensembles should become itea sanctioned and sponsored events:

We need competitions that are relevant to the actual, realistic chances of most of the competitors' musical futures. Honesty. Diversity. Inclusion. We need a Bake-Off.

This could foster the competitive spirit while not bruising any of those arrogant, little egos we seem to be producing more and more as time passes.

As long as everyone gets a participation trophy, this is fine. No "winners" or "losers," no "first prize" or "second prize."

There is a lot of humor, actually humorous sarcasm, in this thread. But, ITEA leaders should be reading this thread and asking themselves "What can we learn from the way these people feel about ITEA?".

It's just fine to be inclusive to those of various races and proclivities and all those things... but it seems to me that this particular organization should also be inclusive to tuba players.

The inclusion doesn't bother me at all. What irks me is the DIS-inclusion of truly qualified participants in order to make way for the somewhat qualified. (looking at you, Arizona ITEC in 2023) Surely there's room for consideration of merit as well in ITEA?

It's sort of like when we get hired for a gig (whether one night or a lifetime job) and most of the music sucks. If you don't like playing their sucky music, form your own band/orchestra.

Since ITEA has become primarily an ACADEMIC organization, it should come as no surprise that it has adopted academic definitions of diversity, which are quite limited in scope. Another facet of the academic world is a disdain for merit.

Some of you may have seen my FB post about how things like "contract grading" (now popular at colleges nationwide) are destroying merit and encouraging mediocrity.

The academic world has become a world in which professors brag on LinkedIn about starting intermediate-level accounting courses with ten minutes of coloring.

I’ve seen some of these directional school tuba ensembles do bake sales to fund their trips. I think less ensembles would be ideal for these, but they will not refuse any collegiate ensemble.

As per the executive director, the next international conference in 2 years will be at Oklahoma State University.

Regionals next year will be in West Illinois, Georgia, Boston, Kansas City, Oklahoma State Univ, and at University Texas Rio Grande Valley

I’m personally not a fan of the locations. If there is enough interest I’d consider hosting one in Ohio.

Host a T.U.B.A.

not just for codgers.

Invite college professors and their students.
