Re: Longshot -- anyone traveling PNW through Midwest?

Hi Tim, wow, that's amazing. I'll be in touch about it in a few days. A very large travel companion, but well-behaved. Best solution, would be Amtrak, since the empire builder goes straight from St Paul to the West Coast up there. But that takes a long time, something like 36 hours each way....

Longshot -- anyone traveling PNW through Midwest?

Specifically, from Portland to Minneapolis. Obviously a longshot, but figured I'd ask because sometimes you get lucky. :tuba:

Thanks!

Re: Orchestral "Presence"

I think we are talking about "projection" here -- the ability for the tuba sound to get up and out and in front of the group, and to carry well through the ensemble and audience. A very, very fine pro tuba player that I've chatted with for ~20 years has long said that some tubas (ones that...

Re: NJ Facebook: early PT-6

Lots of stuff gets rotated in and out during various times of life. These are bort jr and bortette’s (I don’t know if there is a little girl, just guessing) wonder years. They are fleeting. Clearly bort knows this. Mine is now of an age and ability to join in with us in a community band as a family...

Re: NJ Facebook: early PT-6

Years ago, I always wondered why community bands/orchestras rarely had any people who were in their 30s/40s with kids. I am just below the middle of that category and have kinds aged (almost) 2 and 4 ...and I am in 2 community bands  And I am not alone in the bands That's the strangest thing I...

... It checks all the boxes, but there's just no time to use it. Could be the world's most perfect tuba... and it will sit in the corner of the room. ... Completely understand that. I didn't start trying to play again until the kids were nearing high school, and didn't bother to buy a tuba until ev...

PS -- my PT-6 was s/b 270xxx

So a bit earlier than this one, but not by a whole lot. I bet this is a very nice tuba.

Re: NJ Facebook: early PT-6

Which thing on @bort2.0’s checklist does this not check? Or, in other words, why would it barely get used? My Scherzer is cheap enough that not using it all the time wouldn’t be so bad, but it doesn’t have 5 valves, so I understand it not checking the boxes. It checks all the boxes, but there's jus...

"Clock"... you mean Timepiece... :facepalm2:

But hold up, isn't "don't spend any more money than necessary" the most bloke-y reason possible?

Re: NJ Facebook: early PT-6

Side note, which will also completely talk myself into a circle, based on inflation, I think spending real money on durable goods that you plan to keep and use, is a smart move right now. When I sold my PT6, I think I also sold it for $8,000, and I think it was 2019. Inflation calculator says that i...

Re: NJ Facebook: early PT-6

Hey, that's really cool! I'm probably going to pass though. I've realized that at this point, it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend that much money, even if it's a good deal, on something that will barely get used. Merely owning this will not afford me more time or opportunities to play it. As muc...

No problematic after-ring.THICK old pre-war brass!

This is independent of the other post. I want to sell or trade this regardless of what else I buy or don't.

Very cool to see the upright bell in such fine condition! Good price too. I'm always surprised how easily these tubas play when they are in good shape. And since Matt has been over it, this will play very very well

Bump! In case anybody is interested, this may be your chance. I'm having a garage sale next weekend, and I'm going to post this on craigslist before then as well. I'm hoping to sell it next weekend, but if anybody here is interested, please let me know prior to that so we can work something out. Pla...

Re: Horns I sold, that I wish I had back

An early model, fully handmade, rotary PT-6 Loved it, it was everything I ever wanted in a CC tuba. Newer PT-6 's are good, but lack the "spirit" of the handmade one. I sold it to for house down payment money, pre COVID/pre-inflation, so we got an excellent return for the tuba sale $. But ...

Does a 188 fit your checklist, or is it too small? My unwavering 20-year opinions remain true: The 188 is the most perfect tuba ever invented and it's never too small. I just kinda wish it was a little bigger sometimes. I actually have told myself for the last few years, when I ...
