Re: Where are you playing on Mardi Gras?

Mardi gras isn't much of a thing up in Canada, but I did go to one of the designated busking spots in a subway station and play tunes from a big book of old jazz! Just me a cappella for a few hours, was fun!

Tuba solo arrangement for God rest ye Merry Gentlemen!

Will post the pdf tomorrow (what's the best way to do that?), for trumpet, Eb tenor cor, euphonium or trombone, and tuba solo!

(will accept any tips/improvement ideas/insults/compliments on the tuba part!)

Re: Gregson Tuba Concerto in Eb Treble Clef!

Not an Eb player myself, but I'll share it with my neighbour in the brass band

Great! I just fixed the last errors, as far as I know. Enjoy!

Good point arpthark, it isn't really that C major-y. I did find this easy to read with the 3 sharps and it would've been much more effort to add all ...

Gregson Tuba Concerto in Eb Treble Clef!

Hello, this seems to come up from time to time, so thought I'd do a transcription myself. Copied from the Novello edition, I've got the first movement done so far and will post once I'm done the others. Enjoy! https://musescore.com/user/50758335/scores/29874656

This picture is so crisp and clear that I can actually see it's just a painted backdrop behind him! Turn-of-the-century photography studio exposed!

Re: Chellenges for less affluent students

I just want to say that I found this thread inspiring and refreshing. Going to spend less time lamenting circumstances or how things could've been different, and more time practicing and getting excited for gigs!

Re: Reasonable price?

Is there a place a water key can be added to solve this issue? I'm definitely going to try it out next summer.

The part where the water pools is behind the main tuning slide, would be tricky to reach a water key there (either reach with left hand going between two braces on the main tuning ...

Re: Reasonable price?

One thing that's a bit particular about a 25J is that due to the wrapping of the 4th valve slide, any time water accumulates in it (the 4th slide) you need to rotate the whole tuba to actually get it out. False tones are very good, too, which I find necessary for low C and B (unless I have all the ...

My orchestral tuba debut! February 8th 2026

Very excited! There's an orchestra in my city (Montréal, Canada) mainly for doctors and students in medicine called "I Medici di McGill", and I learned last week that they needed a tubist for their next concert. I sent in some recordings I had had done (Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet Montagues and ...

Re: “elephant whinney”

That's fun, wonder if it's the same arrangement I played with a British Brass band once. Does it have a cadenza going up to a high G? I would do any "whinney" half valve as in sleigh ride, yeah.

French C tuba allowed in modern orchestra?

Hi there, just curious as to what you (particularly those with orcestra jobs) think conductors' opinions of playing an authentic old French C tuba (1950s or 1960s) would be for: a) Berlioz, Pictures at an Exhibition Bydlo, and other rep originally intended for French C tuba b) excerpts usually ...

Re: Gewandhausorchester Principal Tuba

Apparently German orchestras are indeed strict about that BBb and F only thing; I heard from my teacher that the tubist in Berlin Phil wanted to use CC for something and they said no! I like that it's one less choice to make as far as which horn to play things on. Those B-tuba excerpts are fun!

Re: pops concerts: scowl or raise your eyebrows re. more bloke-opinions

I sing in the chorus with my local symphony, standing just above and behind the low brass, so I hear them quite well. There was a concert in 2024 around Christmas where they did pines of Rome, something else and a bunch of Christmas carols arranged for orchestra. In the arrangements it was quite ...
