Re: Orchestral "Presence"

You bring up some good points bort2.0 . And it is probably going to involve both projection and presence as the mood, style, insert more things here, change within a piece or from piece to piece. Projection probably was a better word for what I was trying to find out overall (if you could hear me). ...

Re: Orchestral "Presence"

Thanks for the great input, everyone. I imagine the mic has the most to do with it, but I will ask the conductor (he's a friend of mine) as well. Maybe it's the hall, too? I attended the same orchestra's final concert the year before I joined again and the tuba player (another friend of mine) was us...

Re: Orchestral "Presence"

Sorry, no particular advice. Just wanna say I love your cats! :tuba: Thanks! They're super sweet. They mostly run away when they see me getting ready to play a tuba, but if it's just sitting there, they always come check it out. Just a note about my 2341, I don't know that it makes a hu...

Re: Orchestral "Presence"

Not seeking praise, just feedback. Thanks! I obviously know where I'm playing in these recordings, but was curious to see if others can hear me (or not) where they think is appropriate while not knowing my part or the score. I might also be looking for an excuse to get/build a bigger tuba. Not that ...

Orchestral "Presence"

Hello, As some of you might know, I'm playing with a community orchestra again after a few years off. The group has grown to 90 musicians since I last played with them and I'm feeling like my King 2341 doesn't have the same "presence" it did the last time I played with them. I feel like I ...

Re: Portland, OR: 5v Conn 6/4 "Connzilla" w/ both bells, $1,695

That is a very tempting tuba....I saw it listed on Facebook for $1,995, so they either came down in price, or just offer it lower for locals. I would love to try that thing.

Re: large-ish concert tuba

That's what I'm planning on doing for my next project as well. You can see the initial photos and thread I started about it HERE . I acquired an extra 2nd valve to graft on as a 4th valve, plus another "empty" valve cluster (no pistons) to use for extra tubing/braces/etc. I took all the sl...

Re: eBay Japan (free US shipping): Conn 3J CC

That seems like a good price. There are some bigger dents in it, but that bell looks pristine. I've played on one of these for just a few minutes, but I really liked those few minutes! Sweet little CC.

Re: Great Tuba Parts?

I don't know what level of player you are. Some of the suggested pieces above can be challenging. So, how about: Russian Easter Overture Ein Heldenleben Easy, but fun: How To Train Your Dragon Thanks for the continued suggestions! I'm a band teacher, so I went through the music ed program with a gr...

Re: 4v Miraphone 186 CC at Dillon, $3295

The first tuba I owned was a four-valve 186 CC. I loved it.

The Dillon website says it's out of stock. Did someone grab it already?

Re: Great Tuba Parts?

Most of the pieces with great tuba parts are fairly-to-very challenging for community orchestras and/or (if small paid orchestras or very stingy executive directors) require at least one extra player in each section. That is certainly something I've considered. I remember back in high school asking...

Re: Great Tuba Parts?

I can't give specific examples, but the community orchestra I last played in had more of a pops focus, and a lot of those pops style pieces had tuba parts all throughout. Unlike the more symphonic stuff where you play two or three notes and then count 187 measures. We do play some pops stuff, which...

Great Tuba Parts?

Hey everyone, Last fall I started playing in our community orchestra again. Now that our season just ended, the director sends out a survey in which he asks for suggestions for future rep. I'll admit, I'm more of a band guy, so I'm not sure what all is out there for orchestra that isn't an entire sy...

I've got a friend's Yamaha YCB-822S. It's silver and has piston valves (plus one rotor). Nice big, warm sound. Pristine condition. I'm in Lincoln, Nebraska and would be willing be drive and meet you halfway.
