Re: Tuba Solo, Brass Band, et al…

I bet you had fun with this, Doc. (Maybe not as much fun as at the brewery, though?) Are there lots of Eb bass solos in the brass band literature? I’m trying to treat this like one of your play along by ear videos. The fiddly bits will take a few passes. Just ignore the mistakes. :smilie8: Yes, it ...

Tuba Solo, Brass Band, et al…

I got to play a solo with the Houston Brass Band. I was playing Bb on the concert, and I had a cold Eb waiting for me up front. It wasn’t perfect, but it was fun, and the crowd really liked it. And that’s fine with me. https://youtu.be/L_yFX46vTYo?si=_Cnd_N7jTbrnUXul If you like brass band music, ch...

Re: Eastman 534 vs the 562

Hey doc, can you compare those two directly? What do you feel the hagen does better than the 562? Am I right in saying they feel similar, but the miraphone is larger? The Hagen is bigger in most respects. It plays like a 5/4 tuba, whereas the 562 plays like a 4/4+. The Hagen has a deeper, richer, b...

Re: NABBA Championships this weekend

My second section band played the test piece late in the day (surely the judges had enough by then), but we play very early Saturday for choice piece, so I’m looking forward to enjoying lots of bands after that without any stress. I listened to the live streams. Y’all set the bar very high for the ...

Re: All bloke thinks about is tuning.

I shared with bloke a video of recent Easter rehearsal in which I used the Packer Eb. (I’m still not the finest sight reader of bass clef on Eb😳). After going back and listening to it, I should probably issue a public apology to Joe, as the intonation was not up to my standards (no fault of the inst...

Re: Eastman 534 vs the 562

The only reason I sold the 562 was to get a 496. Otherwise, it was a very good instrument.

Re: old friends - old tracks

@bloke
The piano player on those recordings is the legendary Floyd Domino, the same piano player that won Grammy with Asleep at the Wheel for his rendition of One O’Clock Jump.
He can do it all. And not many better playing stride.

Re: old friends - old tracks

Those sound great, I've never had an opportunity to play in a group like that. I told you that I had to pass up hearing Asleep at the Wheel in a small venue in Memphis for only $25, because I just didn't want my car stolen or didn't want to get shot. Basically, Western Swing is just Dixieland using...

Re: old friends - old tracks

Those are great cuts! Ghost of a Chance is pretty darned special! When I was traveling all over playing western swing, we recorded the Bob Wills version of Dinah. It’s different enough that it almost sounds like a different song. Either way, it’s a classic tune. I would have brought some sort of ba...

Re: Wessex Helicon

Also, just like the oberkrainer recording you posted, I've noticed studio recordings almost always have the baritone play more than one track. In this one, it sounds like it's just the baritone playing both the bass and melody, but in many, it's that they go back and overdub the baritone part with ...

Re: Wessex Helicon

My other comment, because I laughed when you said it is light weight -- and it looks like 100% of that weight is on your shoulder, would be -- if you put about 20% of your body weight on your shoulder like that (as I would be doing) would you still call it light weight? The Eb weighs 17lbs....

Re: Wessex Helicon

Man, Bill, I'll never get tired of your sound. I've always wondered, though: American tubists seem to insist that helicon is played commonly in blasmusik bands, but I usually see baritone more often than any form of tuba, especially in oberkrainer music. I assume the helicon was more often seen in ...

Re: Wessex Helicon

I like my Eb helicon. The only problem I have experienced is that one of the bell screw mounts fell off the tenon at TubaChristmas (easy fix). Otherwise, it has been a fun instrument. Really good response, respectable intonation, easy to play. It’s a keeper! I’ve played the CC 2-3 times, and it is a...
